Ancient Sabratha ( Half Day Tour )

The tour departs towards the mythical Sabratha, a word said to have derived from a Phoenician word meaning "Grain Market" that subsequently evolved into the Greek "Abrotonos" and Latin "Habrotonum". Sabratha has been destroyed and rebuilt on a number of occasions and as such, several of the monuments haveremained incomplete. You proceed towards the ancient site, boasting a spectacular panorama of the Mediterranean Sea, where you shall become acquainted with wonders including the Forum, with its splendid grey granite columns and magnificent porticos, the Basilicas, the
Temple of Liber Pater, consecrated to one of the most revered gods of Roman Africa, and the Mausoleum of Bes, whose metopes illustrate two of
mythology's most significant characters, Bes and Hercules, combating the Nemean lion.

You may then marvel at the Roman Theatre, one of the only monuments intact that boasts imposing columns of different style - fluted and plain. Some of the capitals are
adorned with masks and animals and the theatre's pulpit is embellished with stunning reliefs. The theatre was a gift from Septimus Severus, the Roman Emperor born in the region of Tripolitania. A selection of the mosaics that were found on display is now housed in the Roman Museum on the site.
Return journey towards the port to meet the ship.
